Today was a very eventful day. After running a few important errands, I took my daughter and her friend shopping. Sarah had a gift card, her friend came along without a penny to spend. I asked my daughter, "What about KK? She doesn't have a gift card." Sarah replied, "Mom, I plan to spend half of my gift card on KK." I took a step back as I watched them scramble through the racks of items, ooeing and awing. I only thought, "This is going to be interesting considering they have much more than what's on her gift card." Many lessons to be learned from this experience. As they watched the cashier ring-up each item, their jaws dropped :(. Sarah looked over and said, "Mom, it's too much! Now what?" I simply replied, "Yes, it's over the amount on your gift card. What can you do about this?" She then asked, "Can you pay for part of it?" As difficult as it was, I knew this was a wonderful teachable moment. I replied, "I know you can figure this out between the two of you." Sarah and KK had some conversation then politely told the cashier what items they really didn't need or want. They had a few dollars remaining. Sarah asked the cashier if she could show them what their choices were for the remaining amount. As we drove home, I listened to them wrestle through the bag. KK commented, "See Sarah, sharing is caring." Wow!!.....I asked, "What did you both learn today? Sarah replied, "You can't have everything you want." I asked KK, "What do you mean when you say caring?" KK replied, "What you do for someone. We cared to share. You make the person feel equal; important." This is a perfect example of our children learning every moment from every bit of experience. Sarah and KK learned many lesson such as communicating and problem-solving, but mostly, kindness through sharing. They learned that being kind, there is an inward and outward mindset. One of personal growth for both her friend and herself. These learned habits will take our children tofar successful journies. "developing healthy minds through building character."
